As people age, their care needs often change, and for some, this transition can be challenging. It's a time when important decisions about care options come to the forefront. The choice between staying at home or seeking residential aged care is a crucial one, and it's essential to be well-informed.

To kick things off, we'll delve into what aged care entails and how to make informed decisions. We'll focus on two primary options: home care and residential aged care.

Home Care Packages: Staying at Home with Support

One option that many individuals prefer is staying in the familiar and cherished surroundings of their own homes. This is where Home Care Packages come into play. These packages offer government-subsidised services that enable people to remain at home for as long as possible.

Sonia Mezentseff's extensive experience in the financial planning industry uniquely positions her to provide you with the financial insights and support you need to make informed decisions regarding your aged care.

Home Care Packages cover a wide range of services, ensuring that your daily needs are met while you continue to live comfortably in your own home. These services include:

  1. Personal Care: This includes assistance with showering or bathing, dressing, mobility, meal preparation, and eating.
  1. Support Services: These services encompass help with washing and ironing, house cleaning, gardening, basic home maintenance, and home modifications related to care needs, such as installing handrails in the shower. Moreover, transport services are available to assist with shopping, visiting the doctor, or participating in social activities.
  1. Clinical Care: This category covers nursing and other health support, including physiotherapy to help with exercise, mobility, strength, and balance, as well as podiatry for foot care.

Additionally, Home Care Packages can provide aids and equipment to assist with mobility, communication, or personal safety.

Home Care Packages come in four levels, ensuring that people with varying care needs can access the appropriate support:

  • Home Care Level 1: For those with basic care needs.
  • Home Care Level 2: Designed for individuals with low-level care needs.
  • Home Care Level 3: Suitable for people with intermediate care needs.
  • Home Care Level 4: Tailored for those with high care needs.

Before you can access a Home Care Package, you must be assessed and approved by the Government's Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). This team, composed of healthcare professionals like doctors, nurses, and social workers, assesses your situation and care requirements. They provide information on suitable care options and can help you access or refer you to residential or home care services in your local area. To arrange an appointment with ACAT, you can visit the Government's aged care portal, 'My Aged Care,' at www.myagedcare.gov.au or ask your doctor to make an appointment with the ACAT in your area.

Staying at home with the support of a Home Care Package offers a viable option for those who cherish their independence and wish to age gracefully in their own homes. With Sonia Dallimore's guidance, you can make the best financial decisions to ensure a secure future as you navigate the aged care landscape.
